Quotient: The answer to a division problem.
Dividend: The number inside the division bar. The number being divided.
Divisor: The number outside and to the left of the division bar. The number the dividend is being divided by.
Fraction: Part of a whole number
-The denominator (the bottom number) says how many parts the whole is divided into. Ex) Usually, a pizza pie is divided into 8 slices.
-The numerator (the top number) says how many parts we have. Ex) If I ate 2 of those 8 slices, my fraction would be 2/8 or 1/4 when simplified.
Decimal: A number in between two whole numbers based on tenths or the number 10.
-It must include a decimal point. Ex) 46.7 is known as 46 and 7/10ths.
Factors: Numbers you can multiply together to get another number.
Ex) In the problem, 2 x 3 = 6, the 2 and 3 are factors.
Greatest Common Factor (GCF): The largest factor that two numbers share.
-List all of the factors of each number. Then, circle the factors that are the same for each number. Find the largest factor that they both share.
Ex) The factors of the number 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 and the factors of 16 are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. The common factors are 1, 2, and 4. So, 4 is the GCF of 12 and 16.
Least Common Multiple (LCM): The smallest multiple that two numbers share.
-Skip count or count by multiples of each number. Ex) If you had the number 3, start counting: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, etc. If you have the number 5, start counting: 5, 10, 15, etc. 15 is the smallest multiple that both numbers share. So, the LCM of 3 and 5 is 15.
Prime Number: A number whose only factors are 1 and itself.
